Witness to Hendrix's famous guitar burning at the legendary Monterey music festival of 1967 and the Rolling Stones notoriously debauched 1972 tour of North America, O'Neal also managed to capture more reflective artists such as Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Trusted with intimate access by the gods of rock, some of O'Neal's photographs have never been published and the relationships he established led to some of the most candid portraits of an iconic era in modern culture.

• Photos of 1970s rock stars with their parents reveal humble roots in their childhood homes

'I was part of a very select group of guys, there might have been six or eight of us, based out of Los Angeles, who did most of the album covers in the late 1960's and early 1970's,' said O'Neal.

Counting bands such as Steppenwolf and The Mamas & the Papas as his photographic subjects, O'Neal was aware of the privilege the musicians had granted him.

'Everyone of these photographs has a story behind it and I love stories and I love sharing mine,' said O'Neal.

'I am very excited to have the opportunity to present 'Scene from Inside'.

Getting one of his first tastes of the rock lifestyle at Monterey, O'Neal witnessed Hendrix cement his pyrotechnic reputation as he set his guitar on fire.

'The stage was seven feet high and I'm little over six feet tall,' said O'Neal.

'It was awkward to shoot from below the stage because it was hard to see over it.'

Although O'Neal was particularly friendly with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, he also witnessed the other early 1970's supergroup The Rolling Stones at their elegantly wasted peak.

'We hung out. I went to the studio and waited for the moment to take the pic,' said O'Neal.

'With the Stones you definitely have to read the moment.

'I never really found the moment in the studio, but were very willing for me to take pictures at the concert,

'The real experience was being on stage with them.'

Having photographed over 50 album covers in his career, O'Neal is excited to show off his work.

'The majority of my rock and roll photos that I have in my archives have never been published,' said O'Neal.

'As I go through all these images I see the photographs with more objectivity, and I want to share them.'

José de Almada-Negreiros nasceu a 7 de Abril de 1893, em S. Tomé e Príncipe, e morreu a 15 de Junho de 1970, em Lisboa. Órfão de mãe desde 1896, viajou para Lisboa com sete anos, indo viver para casa de uma tia materna. Frequentou os estudos primários e liceais em Lisboa, no Colégio Jesuítico de Campolide e no Liceu de Coimbra. No ano de 1912, participou no 1.º Salão do Grupo dos Humoristas Portugueses e, em 1913, sendo aluno da Escola Internacional de Lisboa (desde 1911), apresentou a sua primeira exposição individual, composta por 90 desenhos. Nesta escola conheceu Fernando Pessoa, com quem veio a editar, em 1915, a Revista Orpheu, juntamente com Mário de Sá Carneiro. A partir de então, tornou-se num dos principais representantes do movimento modernista, defendendo Amadeu de Sousa-Cardoso, quando da sua exposição em Lisboa, em 1916. No ano de 1917, juntamente com Guilherme de Santa-Rita, participou no projecto Portugal Futurista e escreveu o Ultimatum às Gerações Futuristas Portuguesas do Século XX. Entre 1919 e 1920, seguiu os estudos de pintura em Paris, redigindo textos e grafismos que viriam a ser célebres. Em 1925, estando em Lisboa, pintou um painel para o café A Brasileira do Chiado. Viveu entre 1927 e 1932 em Espanha, regressando depois para Portugal, onde se casou com a pintora Sara Afonso, de quem teve um filho, José Afonso de Almada Negreiros. Em 1938, Almada concluiu os vitrais para a Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, cujo arquitecto fora Pardal Monteiro. Almada-Negreiros destacou-se como um artista e escritor multifacetado, cuja obra apesar de todas as sua diversas formas de expressão, é marcada por traços comuns, como a graciosidade e a irreverência.
